Memorial Day

A day to remember, respectfully. God bless all the families with military members, past and present. Those who were lost to war and those still standing. Amen

The gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery are graced by U.S. flags on Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

  1. Lord, I pray especially for my friend, Karen. Her only child is now in Iraq for his third tour. Last week when 3 Americans died in Iraq Karen was a wreck. In that same week Karen held the hand of her step-mother as she took her last breath on earth.

Yesterday during church her cell phone rang. A quick glance told her it was her son. She ran out of the church whispering, "Don't hang up. I'm here. I'm here."

"I'm here." That's all a Mom can say when the child of her heart puts himself in harms way to protect everything and everyone back home.

"I'm here." Help Karen and all those Moms and Dads, siblings, spouses, little kids, friends, and sweethearts who are spending a year of anxiety, holding their breath, waiting for each phone call or email. Help them to lean on you. Help them, Lord, to hear you whispering, "Don't give up. I'm here."

    Amen.
