Back to that Family Love...P3

...and priorities

I'm searching again, about love between parent and child. I have spent IDK how many hours and days with four books to reference and, can't find one scripture in the Bible that says anything about parents or children "loving" each other.

I've been into many chapters and verses referenced in these books and Biblegateway.com looking under: love, child, father, mother, parent, responsibility, respect, loving...not one commandment about parent and child love.

I found plenty of scripture about parents responsibilities to "teach" children, to "guide" them, to "discipline" them. But not one reference to "loving" them.

For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son...John 3:16 and, we are commanded to love each other even those who are our enemies Matthew 5:44 (43-48). We are told about unfailing and undying love, increasing love and spiritual love, forgiving, fulfilling and tender love. I found scripture for all of those.

And about a child to parent:
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Collasians 3:20

For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death Matthew 15:4

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12

But no mention of love.

"Smiths Bible Dictionary says, LOVE: A natural affection. Also spiritual affection for holy things, which is a fruit of the spirit.

I'm sure love for all includes our children, and maybe God had faith in us to believe that we automatically love our children in a special way maybe it is "natural", maybe His example with His son is enough, maybe that was His design and maybe - a special love has nothing to do with it. I was looking to find it in black or red, like the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule or the spousal relationship. "Parent love thy child, children love thy parent (or any variation)" couldn't find it anywhere.

There is supporting scripture for partners love, neighbors love, enemies love and the responsibilities are made clear. But the parent relationship I couldn't find the word love anywhere. It must be somewhere! If you know, let me know.

Maybe because a partner, neighbor etc are people we choose in our lives and our children well, we get what we get and the bond should be their "naturally" they are literally a piece of us.

  1. Miawa,

In studying Scripture we sometimes have to think like a ancient Israelite or like a first century Jew or Roman or Greek. It takes a lot of research to do that. Otherwise we find ourselves imposing 20th/21st Century America ideas on the Scriptures. Ideas like children being the center of our lives and the idea of "teenagers." Totally unheard of in ancient days.

    Keep digging...

  2. Maybe it would be easier to research the subject of what love (charity) really is. (ICorinthians 13) I prefer the KJV reading.
